Ear Drum Repair (Tympanoplasty)
Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to repair a damaged or perforated eardrum, improving hearing and protecting the middle ear from infections. Advances in medical technology now allow for incision-less tympanoplasty, a minimally invasive approach where the eardrum is repaired through the ear canal, without the need for external cuts. This technique often uses specialized tools or adhesives to close the perforation, offering quicker recovery and less discomfort compared to traditional methods. It is also done in the clinic without the use of general anesthesia (going to sleep).
For more complex cases, a traditional tympanoplasty may still be necessary, involving a graft to reconstruct the eardrum. Both approaches aim to restore the eardrum’s integrity, improve hearing, and reduce the risk of recurring infections. Tympanoplasty, whether incision-less or conventional, is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing most patients to recover comfortably at home. These innovations provide effective solutions for restoring ear health and improving quality of life.
