Ask Dr. Ruffin Anything

Parents, do you ever wonder what it's like to grow up with hearing loss? Want to learn how a deaf audiologist and ear surgeon navigated hearing loss? Tune in to hear our stories and take your questions.

The goal of this talk is to reframe hearing loss as a “connection impairment” and to discuss how the secondary effects of hearing loss can affect the employment setting. Dr. Ruffin has had profound hearing loss since birth and has been able to succeed in one of the most competitive professional fields.

About the talk: 1) How to communicate in ASL or text with your doctor/nurse when they wear face masks. 2) Learn about how hospitals work and how they will change with COVID-19. 3) Learn about tools & apps you can use to prepare ahead of time. To be maximally prepared, look over the resources provided by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD).

Dr. Ruffin will be a the second speaker in the inaugural Johns Hopkins Equal Access in Science and Medicine Lecture Series. This lecture series was developed by a group of students and student organizations at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Ruffin will join over 20 world-renown faculty for the 9th Annual Seattle Otology, Endoscopic Ear & Rhinology Course held at the Seattle Science Foundation. Topics covered will include sinus and ear surgery techniques for the general otolaryngologist.

Dr. Ruffin will speak at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in Seattle. He joins a panel discussing the documentary film, Moonlight Sonata. This film is the latest release of the award-winning filmmaker, Irene Taylor Brodsky. Moonlight Sonata shares the journey of her young son receiving a cochlear implant and how his identity as a person with hearing loss changes.

Dr. Ruffin spoke about the rehabillitation of severe and profound hearing loss at the Neurosurgery Grand Rounds hosted by the Seattle Science Foundation. Check out the video of the talk . Closed captions are in progress.

The Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science and Medical Education (Coalition) was co-founded by UCSF Medical Student Disability Services Director Dr. Lisa Meeks, University of Chicago Student Disability Services Director Dr. Gregory Moorehead, and Tim Montgomery, current director of SDS at UCSF and former Assistant Director of Accessible NU at Northwestern Universities Health Science and Professional Chicago Campus.

Dr. Ruffin has bilateral cochlear implants and personally understands the social isolation and challenges of hearing loss. He strongly believes that self-advocacy improves a person’s experience with hearing loss. You will learn self-advocacy and communication techniques that he and other d/Deaf people have developed to succeed around the dinner table and in fast-paced and noisy work settings. He will share how these techniques complement the science that shows how deafness changes the brain. You will learn how a better understanding of these changes can greatly improve your communication.
