A myringotomy is a simple surgery where a tiny hole is made in the eardrum to let trapped fluid drain out of the middle ear. This fluid often collects because the Eustachian tube, which normally helps keep the ear’s pressure balanced, can get blocked and stop air from moving in and out. By releasing the fluid, a myringotomy reduces pain, pressure, and can help improve hearing. Sometimes a small tube is placed in the opening to keep it from closing too soon, so the fluid doesn’t build up again. Myringotomy is easily done in the clinic in less than 5 minutes for adults. Children require general anesthesia.
