What happens after implantation?

Activation of the cochlear implant occurs 2 weeks after surgery. The audiologist stimulates the implant and does initial programming. Adjusting the implant is called “mapping.” Over the next few months, mapping sessions fine tune the implant as the ear learns to use the signal. After the first year, the implant is mapped every 6 months to a year.

After getting a cochlear implant, you'll go through aural rehab to help you get used to your new way of hearing. At first, sounds might seem weird or hard to understand. But don't worry, it usually gets better in a few months. You'll work with experts to learn how to hear better in different situations, like when you're at work or in a noisy place. They might show you special apps or techniques to help you understand people better. This training helps you make the most out of your new implant and improves your hearing over time.
